Leaving feedback on a website

DRAFT: requires legal review

You followed the Privacy link in a feedback box. The website you were on uses Phasemark so its owner, or the design team working for them, can collect comments about the site. Phasemark collects your feedback on the site owner’s behalf.

The site owner decides to collect your feedback and what happens to it: they are the controller of your feedback. Phasemark only stores it and passes it to them, as their processor.

What is sent when you press Send

  • Your comment, and your name if you typed one. If you leave the name blank, the comment is shown as from “Client”.
  • A screenshot of the part of the page you could see, and where you placed the pin. It shows whatever is on your screen at that moment, so close anything private first.
  • The page address (URL) and title, exactly as your browser shows them.
  • Your browser and its version, your operating system and its version, the type of device (desktop, tablet or mobile), the window and screen size, the pixel ratio and your browser’s user-agent text.

Nothing is sent until you press the button. Nothing here asks for an email address.

What is not stored

  • Your IP address is not saved with your feedback. Our server necessarily sees it while your browser connects; we use it only to block abuse, and only as a scrambled one-way value that expires within about an hour. Our hosting providers may keep routine technical logs of their own.
  • The form sets no cookies and does no tracking or advertising. Your browser does not contact any third-party service for it; everything comes from the Phasemark server.

On your device

If sending fails (for example you are offline), the form keeps your comment in this browser tab’s session storage (key wf_feedback_queue) and tries again later. It never leaves your device except by being sent as above, and it is cleared when the tab is closed.

If you type a name into the form, it is remembered in this browser tab’s session storage (key pm_author_name) so you do not have to type it again for the next comment. It is removed when the tab is closed.

Who can see it

The site owner and the people they work with on Phasemark. It is not published anywhere. Feedback is kept for as long as the site owner keeps it, and it is deleted when they close their Phasemark account. Screenshots are stored in a private storage bucket in the EU; see the list of Phasemark’s subprocessors for who handles what and where.

Seeing, changing or removing what you sent

The site owner decides what happens to the feedback, so please contact them first. If you can’t reach them, you can write to us at privacy@phasemark.app, and we will pass your request to the right site owner. Phasemark cannot tell who you are from your feedback. You can also complain to your data protection authority; in Ireland that is the Data Protection Commission.
