Guide

Using Phasemark

Set up a project, put the script on your site, and work through your clients’ feedback round by round.

Getting started

Create a project, add the script to your site and collect your first piece of feedback. It takes a few minutes.

  1. Create a project. On the Projects page click New project, give it a name such as “My website” and click Create project. It can receive feedback straight away.
  2. Copy the script. Open the project and its Install tab. The script holds the project’s key, so copy it from there and do not retype it.
  3. Paste it into your site and publish. Install on your site has the exact place in Webflow, WordPress and Framer.
  4. Send a test. Reload the published site, press the pin button in the corner, click a spot, type a comment and send it. It appears in the project’s Feedback tab within a moment.
  5. Invite your team if you work with others. Teams and roles explains who can do what.

Install on your site

One script, pasted once for the whole site. Where it goes depends on how the site is built.

The script on the Install tab looks like this, with your own address and project key:

<script src="https://.../embed.js" data-api-key="..."></script>

Paste it exactly as the Install tab shows it, and put it in the footer or just before the closing </body> tag so it does not slow down the page.

Webflow

Custom code needs a paid Webflow Site plan or a paid Workspace plan. On the free plan the custom code fields are disabled.

  1. Open your project in Webflow and go to Site settings (called Project settings in older versions of Webflow), then Custom code.
  2. Paste the script into Footer code, which applies to the whole site, and click Save.
  3. Publish the site. The script only runs on the published site, or on the webflow.io address after you publish. It never runs in the Designer preview.

To put it on one page only, open that page’s settings and paste the script into Before </body> tag.

WordPress

WordPress has no built-in box for site-wide scripts. The simplest way is a header and footer plugin such as WPCode:

  1. Install and activate the plugin, then open its Header & Footer screen.
  2. Paste the script into the Footer box and save.
  3. Reload your site while logged out to check that the pin button shows.

If you edit your theme directly, the script goes in footer.php, just before <?php wp_footer(); ?>. A theme update can overwrite that file, so use a child theme.

If your hosting or theme does not let you add a plugin or edit these files, check your theme’s own custom code setting.

Framer

  1. Open your project in Framer and go to Site settings, then General.
  2. Find Custom code and paste the script into End of <body> tag.
  3. Save and Publish the site. The script runs on the published site, not in the editor preview.

If you cannot find the custom code setting, check your builder’s custom code setting in Framer’s own help.

Any other site

Add the script to the page template or footer that every page shares, just before the closing </body> tag. On a static site that is the layout file; in a framework it is the root layout. If the site sets a Content Security Policy, it has to allow the address the script comes from in script-src and connect-src, and data: in img-src.

The Site URL on the Install tab is optional. It only gives you a link from the dashboard to the site.

Not showing up?

  • Published? Publish the site again after saving the script, then reload the published address.
  • Paid plan? Some builders only allow custom code on a paid plan. Check yours.
  • Correct project key? Copy the script from the project’s Install tab again and compare it with what is on the site.
  • Ad blocker? Turn off any ad blocker or privacy extension for the site, or try a private window.

What your client does

Clients need no account and nothing to install. You can send them the site address and these four steps.

  1. Open the site, on a computer, a tablet or a phone.
  2. Press the Feedback pin button in the corner.
  3. Click (or tap) the spot they mean, and type what should change. A name is optional; without one the comment shows as from “Client”.
  4. Press Send.

Each comment arrives with a screenshot of what the client could see, the pin position, the page address, and their browser, system and screen size. On a phone the comment box is a sheet at the bottom of the screen. The widget works with the keyboard too: arrow keys move the pin and Enter places it.

If the connection drops while a client sends, the comment is kept in their browser tab and sent when they are back online.

Rounds

A round is one phase of the project, such as Discovery, Design or Revisions. Rounds keep each phase’s feedback together.

Where new feedback goes

Every project has exactly one current round, and new feedback goes into it. The Rounds tab marks it with Current. Every new project starts with “Round 1” as its current round.

Start the next phase

  1. Open the project and its Rounds tab.
  2. Click New round, give it a name that says what it covers, and click Create round.
  3. The box Make it the current round is ticked. Leave it ticked and all new feedback goes into the new round; untick it to prepare a round and switch later.

To send new feedback to a different round at any time, open the menu on that round and choose Make current. Use Rename to change a name.

Freeze and archive

Freeze a round when its phase is over. A frozen round is read-only: its feedback cannot be changed (status and priority), moved to another round or deleted, and nothing can be moved into it. Choose Unfreeze to open it again. Freezing does not stop the widget collecting feedback, because new feedback goes into the current round.

Archive takes a round off the list. Its feedback stays, with no round.

The current round cannot be frozen or archived. Make another round current first.

Owners and admins manage rounds. Members see the Rounds tab read-only and can still move feedback between rounds that are not frozen.

Statuses and priorities

Every item has a status, a priority and a round. Open an item to change them.

Statuses and priorities
StatusMeans
To doNobody has started. Every new item begins here.
In progressSomeone is working on it.
DoneThe change is made.

Priority is Urgent, High, Normal or Low. Use it to decide what to do first: the list can be sorted by priority.

On the Feedback tab, filter by status (Open shows everything not done), by round and by priority, and search for words in a comment. Open an item to see the screenshot, the pin and the device details, and to change its Status, Priority and Round. Changes are saved as you make them.

Teams and roles

Invite the people you work with. They see all your projects.

  1. Open Settings > Team, enter their email, choose a role (Admin or Member) and click Invite.
  2. They get an email with a link that works once and expires after 7 days.
  3. They accept it with an account that uses that same email address. If they have none, the link lets them sign up first.
What each role can do
RoleCan
Owner (you)Everything, including billing, the team and deleting the account.
AdminManage projects, rounds and project keys, and invite or remove members. No billing and no account deletion.
MemberWork on feedback: view it, change status and priority, assign it to rounds and export it. Members cannot create or delete projects, see project keys or manage the team.

Seats count you, your members and the invitations still waiting. Starter includes 2 seats, Pro includes 5 seats and Agency has unlimited seats. If you go over after moving to a smaller plan, nobody is removed: everyone keeps access, and you can invite again once you are back within the limit.

If your subscription ends, your team loses access to your projects until it is renewed.

Notifications

Choose how you hear about new feedback, project by project.

  • Instant is the default, for you and for every team member: one email a couple of minutes after feedback arrives. Items that arrive close together share one email.
  • Daily digest sends one email a day with the new items.
  • Off sends nothing for that project.

Change it in Settings > Notifications or at the top of the project page. Everyone on a team chooses for themselves. Every email has a link that turns that project off without signing in, and the page it opens lets you turn it back on. Nothing is sent while the account is locked.

White-label widget

On the Agency plan the widget can carry your name instead of ours.

Open a project, then Settings > Widget. Choose the button’s label (up to 20 characters), its colour, whether it sits bottom right or bottom left, and a team name (up to 40 characters) that your clients see in the comment box (“Comment for Halden Studio”) and after they send a comment (“Halden Studio has your comment and the screenshot”). Leave the team name blank to keep “the design team”. The preview shows the widget on a light and a dark page.

The text on the button turns white or dark by itself, whichever is easier to read on your colour, and the page warns you when a colour may be hard to see on light or dark pages. Owners and admins can change the settings, and a change reaches your site within about a minute.

The Privacy link in the comment box opens a neutral page with your team name and no Phasemark header. It still says that Phasemark stores the feedback for you and how to reach Phasemark. If you move to a smaller plan your settings are kept and the widget goes back to the standard look until you are on Agency again.

Delete, export and the API

Deleting feedback

Owners and admins can click Delete on an item, in the list or in its detail view, and confirm. Members cannot. For about 10 seconds an Undo button is shown. Afterwards, click Deleted above the list to see deleted items and Restore one. After 90 days a deleted item is removed for good, screenshot included. Feedback in a frozen round cannot be deleted until the round is unfrozen.

Exporting

Click Export CSV on the project page. The file has every item with its time, device details and status. Deleted feedback is not included.

The API and webhooks

On the Pro and Agency plans you can read and change feedback from your own tools and receive events when feedback changes. The API reference has every endpoint, and the FAQ shows how to create a key and set up a webhook.
